The August issue of Conde Nast Traveler features a two-page spread of a photo by Jorg Badura shot in a part of the Sahara Desert known as the Grand Erg Oriental, or Great Eastern Sand Sea. “…When shadows grow long and the sand turns golden, everything comes to life,” notes the accompanying text by Bob Payne. “The camels, lying with knees tucked under them, snort as they are loaded with supplies, water, and the travelers’ goat-hair tents (the Bedouin sleep outside by the fire). Everyone adjusts their cheches, turban-like head coverings that defend against sun and sand, and the caravan is off once more across the rolling dunes.”
